Alongside AdvisorsFamily Advisory

The family needs a plan, too.

Family Advisory is for the people trying to help. A Family Advisor works with parents, partners and siblings on communication, boundaries, expectations and the practical decisions that arrive while someone is away, and stays with them after the person comes home.

What it includes

What Family Advisory includes.

01/Preparation

What to say and what not to say, how much to offer, and where the limits are, agreed before the hard conversation rather than improvised during it.

02/Education

What treatment does and does not do, what the first weeks home usually look like, and what helps. Plain answers to the questions families are embarrassed to ask.

03/Facilitated family sessions

A Family Advisor in the room, or on the call, when the family needs to agree on a position and hold it. Non-clinical, and coordinated with any family therapy the clinical team provides.

04/A steady point of contact

Someone for the family to call while their loved one is in treatment, within the limits the client sets, and a plan for the return home that everyone has seen.

Who it is for

Who it is for.

  • A parent who has been carrying this alone and is not sure whether the next step is to push, to wait or to step back.
  • A spouse or partner who needs to know what to expect at discharge and how to protect the household in the meantime.
  • Siblings and adult children who want to help without being pulled into old patterns.

In the plan

How it fits the rest of the plan.

Alongside the client's work

Family Advisory runs beside the client's own recovery work, not inside it. The client's consent, autonomy and privacy set the limits of what is shared.

Who does it

Family Advisors with their own training in family recovery coaching. On the New York team, Melissa Killeen and Katherine Reynolds; in South Florida, the Lead Advisor on the case.

Boundaries

This is non-clinical support. Family therapy, when a plan calls for it, comes from a licensed professional, and we coordinate with them rather than duplicate them.

With an intervention

When a loved one is not ready to accept help, Family Advisory is where the engagement begins, and Intervention Support follows.

Good to know

Questions families ask.

Can we work with you if our loved one refuses to?

Yes. Many engagements begin with the family alone. The work is still useful, and it often changes what the family does next.

Is this family therapy?

No. It is preparation, education and facilitated conversation from a trained Family Advisor. When the plan calls for family therapy, it comes from a licensed clinician.

Will you tell us what our loved one says in treatment?

Only what the client has authorized. We work within the releases the client signs and will not share beyond them.
