I was born in Colorado and grew up in more places than most people visit: Venezuela, New York City and its suburbs, Tulsa, Montana, Vermont and South Florida. Moving that often teaches you to read a room quickly and to start over without flinching. It did not teach me how to stay sober.
I attempted college three times before I first got serious about sobriety in 2005. After treatment in Minnesota I moved to Delray Beach and spent almost two years in a halfway house. I did the work, and it held long enough for me to go back and graduate. But I needed more help than a sober date and a diploma, and I never knew where to go for it. I struggled to launch a career. I struggled to get to meetings regularly. Eventually I picked up again, and lost the better part of five years.
In December 2013 I started over, and this time I knew exactly what I had to do. The first attempt was not a total loss. It had shown me precisely where the gap is: between getting sober and building a life that makes sobriety worth protecting. I finished an executive MBA and earned certificates from New York University in real estate development, construction management, financial analysis and sustainable design. I left New York as chief operating officer of a family-owned $2 billion portfolio: 200 buildings and 4,000 apartments in Manhattan. When my family and I came back to Florida in 2023, I joined the state's largest office owner as senior director of operations, overseeing corporate functions across 20 million square feet.
I tell that story because the sequence matters more than the titles. Sobriety came first. Structure, purpose and work came next, and they are what made the sobriety hold.
Alongside Advisors exists to fill that gap, deliberately and early, for people who are where I was in 2005. I hold the Recovery Coach Professional credential, with additional coaching certifications in grief, trauma and ADHD, and I keep training. I have surrounded myself with Advisors who are the best I can find at what they do, each with a discipline of their own, for people in early sobriety who want a career, a direction and a life they would choose, whether that means a first career, a return to one, or a change.
