Alongside AdvisorsHow it works

One Advisor, from the first call to the first year.

Treatment programs are good at the weeks inside their walls. The risk sits at the edges: the decision to go, the day of discharge and the months at home. Alongside Advisors is built for those edges. Families begin with us before treatment, during it, at discharge or well after; the sequence below bends to where you start. Here is how an engagement runs.

The sequence

01/The first conversation

A private call with an Advisor, usually the same day.

You tell us what is happening, what has already been tried and what you are hoping for. We ask the questions a program does not: who covers for you at work, what the children know, who is paying for what, where the person will live. Nothing you share leaves the firm, and you are under no obligation after the call.

02/The complete picture

One plan, in writing, that covers the whole situation.

We gather the pieces into a single private plan: the treatment path, the clinicians already involved or still needed, the family's role, travel, timing and money. The plan says what will happen, in what order and who is responsible for each piece. It is reviewed with you and revised until it fits.

03/A Lead Advisor

One person runs the plan and remains the person you call.

We match a Lead Advisor to the client for skills, temperament and style, and build a small team around them where the plan calls for it: a companion for the first weeks home, an Advisor for transport, a coach with the right discipline. The Lead Advisor coordinates all of it, so the family has one number and one relationship.

04/During treatment

The relationship begins before discharge, not after it.

This is the part most aftercare plans miss. With the program's agreement and the client's consent, the Advisor meets the client while they are still in treatment, in person where we can and by video where we cannot. By discharge day the client already knows the person who will be waiting on the other side, trusts them, and has had a hand in the plan for coming home.

Throughout, we coordinate with the clinical team and the family. The program's aftercare recommendations become a schedule with names, dates and logistics attached. The family knows what to expect and what their role is. Whatever the aftercare plan calls for, step-down care, outpatient therapy, recovery housing, a return to work, the client leaves treatment comfortable and fully supported into it.

05/The transition home

The first thirty days, arranged before they begin.

An Advisor accompanies the client from the program door to home. First appointments are booked before discharge and confirmed after. Housing is settled. The first week has a written calendar with at least one fixed commitment every day. The family has been briefed on what helps and what does not. A Personal Companion is present in the first days where the plan calls for it.

06/Ongoing

Support that moves with life.

Coaching continues as work, school and relationships return: career, financial fitness, health, daily structure and family. Check-ins run daily at first and taper to weekly. Support moves up or down as life does, and the Lead Advisor stays involved until the life the client is living is one they would choose for themselves.

Who we work with along the way

Recovery has three parties: the client, the clinical team and the family. The plan only holds when all three are working from the same page.

How we coordinate

With the clinical team

We work within the releases the client signs. The clinical team sets the aftercare plan; we make it happen, report what we observe and refer back when something needs clinical attention. Advisors do not assess, diagnose or treat.

With the family

One point of contact and regular updates, within the limits the client sets. We prepare the family for the transition home, help them agree on what to say and where the boundaries are, and give them someone to call when they are unsure.

With the client

It is their recovery. The client chooses the program, chooses the pathway and sets the pace. The Advisor's job is to make sure that the structure, the appointments and the support are there, so the client can do the work.

Good to know

Questions about getting started.

When is the right time to call?

Earlier than most families think. The best time is while the person is still in treatment, or while the family is deciding on treatment, because that is when the plan for what comes after can still be shaped. We are also called the week before discharge, the day after a relapse and months into a recovery that has stalled. Any of those is a fine time to start.

Do you work with the program we have already chosen?

Yes. We work alongside the treatment team the client already has, in whatever state or country the program sits. The choice of program always belongs to the client and the family. We neither pay nor accept referral fees, and we do not steer anyone toward a particular center.

What if the person is not ready to accept help?

Then the engagement begins with the family. We prepare each person for the conversation, bring in an interventionist we trust or work with the one the family selects, and have admission and travel arranged before it takes place.

How long does an engagement last?

As long as it is useful, and no longer. Some families need two weeks of intensive support around a discharge. Others keep a coaching relationship for a year or more as work, school and family life return. Support moves up or down as life does, and the client and the family decide the pace.

How are fees handled?

Our services are private pay and we do not bill health insurance. Fees are customized to what the situation needs and are usually arranged as a retainer, set out in a written agreement before any work starts. The retainer is built to taper: support is heaviest at the start, when it matters most, and steps down as the client finds their footing, so that they feel supported and then able to live confidently and independently on their own. We review the numbers with you on the first call.
